Backwoods Buckshot

This is the scenic overlook off the Peak-to-Peak Highway that runs from Central City/Blackhawk to Estes Park. We stopped here to admire the view, but wandered a little too close to the property line of the resident down the hill. The sound of gunfire sent us scurrying back up to the car.

Piney Woods Geranium

This species is one of the most common in Colorado. Found in the foothills, the montane (below the subalpine) and the subalpine regions, the flowers have dark pink veins that reflect ultraviolet light, attracting many insects - mostly bees. Used by Americans Indians to stop bleeding and treat sores. Saw these on the Peak-to-Peak Highway leading up to Rocky Mountain National Park.

In the Alpine Tundra

Yesterday we went for a little outing and ended up at the top of a 12,466-foot peak, Sundance Mountain. We got there by driving the Trail Ridge Road west into the Rocky Mountain National Park. After two straight days of rain in the foothills, which translated to snow in the upper reaches, the experience was thrilling!

Prairie Dog Day Afternoon

I discovered this little universe one day a couple of weeks ago during a walk along the north side of the Boulder Creek Path.
