Red-winged Blackbird Nests

On a trip to the neighborhood pond Sunday, I discovered several beautiful nests - some with eggs, others with hatched shells. Take a look:

In My Backyard...in Kittery Maine:
I've spotted nests w/eggs also...3 Wren's nests underside of our deck.
I can get down and peer thru the slats and see three tiny bright blue eggs in one of the nests.
Raymond The Dog spends much of his time on the deck...the wrens are now used to him and aren't afraid to come up and gather his fur balls for their nests. He just looks at them, as if to say: "silly birds, you have feathers, you can't wear fur"

Wrens are fearless. One spring in Greensboro, we were taking the tarp cover off the window air conditioner only to be greeted by a mother wren. Fuss fuss fuss fuss fuss! "Oh, no you don't," she seemed to be saying. "I have babies in there!" So we waited until everyone had grown up and flown away before using the air conditioner.

I can't believe you could get that close to the nests without being dive bombed and total shrilled at. We walk the dogs by the cattails near our home and you'd think we were on top of their nests. Crazy!

Oh, they were diving and fussing all right! I just ignored them. It was worth all the racket to get the photos. I also came away with a road map of scratches on my legs - I was wearing capri pants. As I said in one of my previous posts, I'm an idiot.
